Choose the Right Truck Liftgate

The truck liftgate could handle 5,000 pounds.

The route still hated it.

Drivers were making more than 30 deliveries a day. Some stops had docks. Others had narrow alleys, crowded restaurant parking lots, uneven pavement, and customers waiting for the truck to move.

The gate had enough lifting capacity.

R — Real Load

Start with the heaviest typical load—not the lightest day or a rare worst-case load.

Include the product, pallet, pallet jack, cart, rack, and other equipment riding on the platform.

A gate may have enough lifting capacity but still have the wrong platform dimensions. If drivers must rotate or separate the load, the platform is creating work.

When comparing steel or extruded aluminum platforms, measure the usable loading area and confirm that the complete load fits—not just that the platform can lift its weight.

O — Operating Cycles

How many times will the gate move during a normal shift and the busiest season?

A bakery delivering racks has a different duty cycle than a beverage distributor moving heavy pallets. Even at similar capacities, cycle frequency changes the importance of durability, power requirements, maintenance, and control placement.

Do not assume 30 stops means 30 cycles. Returns, empty containers, pallet jacks, and reusable racks can double the number.

U — Unloading Environment

Map where the truck unloads:

  • Warehouse docks

  • Grocery receiving areas

  • Restaurant parking lots

  • Alleys

  • Curbsides

  • Uneven pavement

A railgate may fit repetitive pallet delivery. A flipaway may make more sense when the truck alternates between docks and street deliveries. Another configuration may better serve trucks needing both dock compatibility and a ready platform.

T — Truck Compatibility

The gate must fit the truck before it can fit the route.

Confirm:

  • Body width and bed height

  • Rear-door opening

  • Mounting space and ground clearance

  • Chassis and body compatibility

  • Completed vehicle weight

  • Rear-axle capacity

The liftgate becomes part of the truck’s empty weight. That reduces the payload available for cargo.

A gate rated for 5,000 pounds does not give the truck another 5,000 pounds of payload. The completed vehicle must remain within its GVWR and front and rear GAWR.
